It’s all about me…It’s all about me!  

That’s the message we hear and see in our culture. It’s the desire we fight in our own heart.  Over twenty-five years ago a book came along that shocked the world.  The opening line seemed to catch the attention of so many people.  It was counter-intuitive.  It pushed back on cultural and human norms.

The first line of the book is a simple and blunt declaration…. It’s not about you.

The book is Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life.   At present, the sales exceed 50 million copies. Nobody anticipated the impact of a new book when it was released in 2002. To put it in perspective, New York Times or Publishers Weekly “Bestsellers” often have 5,000 to 15,000 copies sold in a week.  A USA Today “bestseller” usually has 3,000-10,000+ sold in a week.  The Purpose Driven Life has sold more copies than books like: The Alcoholics Anonymous “Big Book,” The Great Gatsby, or Gone with the Wind.  

What is going on?  Why would so many people gravitate toward a book written by a local church pastor in Southern California?  One reason is that this wildly popular book addresses a fundamental question, “What on earth am I here for?”  

This is a question all of us should ask on a regular basis.  The answer will function like a compass to guide the direction of our choices, dreams, action, and entire life.  For a Christian, the answer to the question, “What on earth am I here for?” is clear.  To fulfill God’s mission and call on our life.

God has created us to be in relationship with Him and with purpose in mind.  I keep my focus on God’s plan with a plaque on my desk that reads:

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  Ephesians 2:8-10

This reminds me of two truths. First, I have received amazing grace from God that allows me to be in a life-giving and wonderful relationship with Jesus.  Second, He has a plan for my life and work to be done in His name.  I am loved, and I have a mission.

If you are a follower of Jesus, both of these are true of you. Never forget that this life is not about me or you.  We are here on mission.  We have purpose.  Jesus has a plan for us.

Live each day firmly rooted in the fact that every single day is a gift.  God’s grace is yours.  And the Maker of Heaven and Earth has a plan for you.  As you wake up and begin each day, ask God to remind you why you are here.  

Heavenly Father, remind me that, through faith in Your Son, everything is settled for me.  I will spend eternity with You.  I am lavished with Your grace and love.  I have a message to share with the world. Your power is alive in me.  Your grace is available to every person I meet today.  Send me in Your power and kindness with Your Good News wherever I go this day.  In Jesus’ glorious name, Amen!

After you lift up a prayer like this, go into your day on mission and with purpose.  Love people in the name of Jesus.  Share the grace of God freely and lavishly.  Serve and let the light of heaven shine through you.  Tell stories of God’s presence, power, provision, and protection in your life.  Freely give what you have received, the message of God’s love, offered in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.  He is the One who gives true purpose and meaning in life.

Information automatically collected

This information includes mailing addresses, job titles, email addresses, phone numbers, intent data (or user behavior data), Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, social media profiles, social media URLs, and custom profiles, for purposes of targeted advertising and event promotion. If you interact with us on a social media platform using your social media account (e.g., Facebook or Twitter), we receive personal information about you such as your name, email address, and gender. 10. DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS?

We do not knowingly solicit data from or market to children under 18 years of age. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18 or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such minor dependent’s use of the Services. If we learn that personal information from users less than 18 years of age has been collected, we will deactivate the account and take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. Withdrawing your consent: If we are relying on your consent to process your personal information, which may be express and/or implied consent depending on the applicable law, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. However, please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of the processing before its withdrawal nor, when applicable law allows, will it affect the processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.

12. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this privacy notice.

California Residents

California Civil Code Section 1798.83, also known as the "Shine The Light" law permits our users who are California residents to request and obtain from us, once a year and free of charge, information about categories of personal information (if any) we disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes and the names and addresses of all third parties with which we shared personal information in the immediately preceding calendar year. If you are a California resident and would like to make such a request, please submit your request in writing to us using the contact information provided below.

If you are under 18 years of age, reside in California, and have a registered account with the Services, you have the right to request removal of unwanted data that you publicly post on the Services. To request removal of such data, please contact us using the contact information provided below and include the email address associated with your account and a statement that you reside in California. We will make sure the data is not publicly displayed on the Services, but please be aware that the data may not be completely or comprehensively removed from all our systems (e.g., backups, etc.).

Verification process

For instance, depending on the type of request you submit, we may ask you to provide certain information so that we can match the information you provide with the information we already have on file, or we may contact you through a communication method (e.g., phone or email) that you have previously provided to us. We will only use personal information provided in your request to verify your identity or authority to make the request.
